The Name Isla Mujeres
There are several versions about the origin of the name of Isla Mujeres (Spanish for Island of Women). The most accepted comes from the narratives of Francisco López de Cámara, which states that when Hernández de Córdoba arrived to the island in 1517, he found a small enclosure at the southern tip that contained idols with feminine characteristics, which led him to call it “Punta Mujeres”.
